The opossum that apparently drank bourbon after breaking into a Florida liquor store was sobered up at a wildlife rescue center and was released unharmed.
The Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge took in an opossum that was brought in by a Fort Walton Beach, Fla., police officer on Nov. 24th.
The opossum was found next to a broken and empty bottle of bourbon. It’s unclear how the animal ended up on the shelf, but it’s possible that it was looking for food and got trapped. The employee who found the opossum said that it was up on a shelf next to a cracked-open bottle of liquor with nothing in it. The opossum was taken to a local animal refuge where it was given food and water. It’s unclear what will happen to the opossum next, but it’s possible that it will be released back into the wild.
The female opossum appeared disoriented and was excessively salivating. She was also pale, which suggests that she wasn’t fully acting normal.
The staff took care of the marsupial and helped her sober up after she was pumped full of fluids.
The doctor said that they gave her fluids to help flush out any alcohol toxins and she was good a couple of days later.
Moore says that he’s never had an opossum break into his store before and that the one that did was not acting hungover. He speculated that it may have been looking for food or shelter, but was still surprised to find the opossum in his store.
According to Moore, a local resident, the possum came in from the outside and climbed up to the rafters, knocking a bottle of liquor off the shelf in the process. Down on the floor, the possum drank the whole bottle.
Opossum Removal
Opossum can be a nuisance to homeowners because they will rummage through trash cans, garbage disposals, and pet food bowls looking for a meal. They are also known to raid gardens and fruit trees. And even in your attic or under your house, an opossum can be a messy tenant, leaving behind urine and feces.
Disease Carry by Opossums
Opossum can carry diseases like leptospirosis, tuberculosis, relapsing fever, and tularemia. Although these diseases can be passed to humans, it is rare.
Leptospirosis is a disease that can infect both humans and animals. It is caused by bacteria that are found in the urine of infected animals. The bacteria can enter the body through mucous membranes or open cuts and wounds. Symptoms of leptospirosis include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and vomiting. If left untreated, the disease can lead to kidney failure and death.
Tularemia is a bacterial infection that can be contracted through contact with infected animals or their tissues. The bacteria can also enter the body through breaks in the skin or by inhaling infected particles. Symptoms of tularemia include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and joint pain. If left untreated, the disease can lead to pneumonia and death.
